LET'S SPREAD WARMTH AT PUGA

LET'S SPREAD WARMTH AT PUGA - Igniting a Brighter Tomorrow

Overview

The "Let's Spread Warmth at Puga" initiative by the Headlight Foundation aims to create a warm and conducive learning environment for children at the Nomadic Residential School in Puga, Karzok, Ladakh. This project, supported by the motorcycling community and well-wishers, addresses severe winter challenges and empowers students to pursue their education uninterrupted.

Why This Project?

Puga, in the remote Changthang region of Ladakh, is known for its geothermal activity. The local nomadic community faces harsh winter temperatures dropping to -30°C for during peak winter months. Schools struggle to remain functional during these conditions, leading to high dropout rates as families migrate. Inspired by our successful project in Hanle, LAHDC officials approached us to implement a similar initiative in Puga. By installing room heating systems, we aim to ensure continuous education for these resilient children.

Living Conditions at Puga:

Puga endures extremely dry and cold conditions year-round, with winter temperatures dropping to -30°C from November to March. These harsh conditions significantly impact the local nomadic community, making daily needs challenging to meet. With limited formal employment and livelihood options, the average annual household income is much lower than other states. The primary activity is cattle rearing, and there is only one high school—the largest nomadic school in the region—serving these resilient children.

Enabling Continuous Education:

Education is a fundamental right, but extreme weather conditions often lead to school dropouts and non-completion of sessions, wasting resources and opportunities. The importance of education is not fully understood in this region, making it crucial to create a comfortable learning environment. By providing adequate facilities, including heated classrooms, this project aims to encourage students to stay in school and complete their education. This is vital for community development and securing a better future for the next generation.

Project Goals:

We aim to install a hybrid heating system in the school classrooms to keep them warm during extremely cold weather, allowing students to continue their education without interruption. This will ensure children remain in school, even during the harshest months.

Benefits of the Project:
  • Enable Education: Ensure children continue their education despite harsh climate conditions.
  • Inclusiveness: Support nomadic communities, often neglected due to their remote location.
  • Care & Empathy: Provide warmth and comfort to children facing -30°C winters, encouraging parents to keep their children in school.
  • Community Development: Educate nomadic children to contribute to community progress and improved living standards.
  • Self-sustaining: Transition from fuel to grid power within two years, reducing resources and running costs.
